Re-introducing The Check In + highly recommend going to a concert
If the heroes of your youth are still touring, GO SEE THEM
One exceptional day this fall I watched the legendary Ani Difranco perform in a vineyard and it was revelatory. She sang:
I live in two different worlds simultaneously - the one I seem to live in, and the one that lives in me.
As usual, she got to the heart of the matter simply: both worlds matter.
After years blogging about career topics over here, I introduced The Check In on Substack excitedly back in January with a piece that my editor didn’t like.
I found that out after proudly sending it to her (published) and booking a call.
Her main issue was that it listed all the macro level problems that plague me (and everyone sane I know). These, I explained, were the reasons I felt compelled to create, and yes, to Check In.
“We already know,” she told me, “and it’s depressing.”
No surprise there - depression loves me.
I ended up changing it (of course) because she’s the expert. But then I promptly fell off, with my little sensitive flame jostled and competing projects crowding in to fill the space.
The truth is, expert advice is a tricky business. I’ve had ten combined years working in the expert advice field (first facing organizations, then individuals), and the opportunities and risks stretch far and wide.
Over the years I have come to see my current role in career coaching as being more about helping people build their self confidence and advising them on their blind spots - and less about specific way-pointing.
Why would I point the way for you?
YOUR INNER WORLD IS DESIGNED FOR THAT.
You live in two different worlds, simultaneously: the one you seem to live in, and the one that lives in you.
What world lives in you?
What matters to it?
Where are you shoving it sideways in favour of “expert advice”?
If you’re considering seeking expert advice, my expert advice is to find a provider who will help you strengthen contact with your inner world.
That’s what will make the difference on the perilous road ahead.
For me, Ani Difranco is one of those experts. Which is why I am thrilled that my beautiful sister drove me to the far reaches of the earth to watch the concert.
If the heroes of your youth are still touring, please stop reading immediately and GET TICKETS to see them play.
If the world inside you is begging you to do something, just do it.
Thanks for checking in. Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.
